What are the best teeth whitening options?
Teeth darken over time from coffee, tea, smoking and age. Whitening can lift the shade safely, but the right method depends on the cause of the staining and how quickly you want results.
1. In-clinic whitening
A professional whitening gel is applied in the clinic while your gums are protected. It gives the fastest and most even result, usually several shades lighter in a single visit. Because a dentist controls the process, it is also the safest option for sensitive teeth.
2. Home whitening trays
Custom trays made from impressions of your teeth are worn with a lower-strength gel for a set time each day, usually for one to two weeks. Results are gradual and can be topped up later with the same trays.
3. Whitening toothpastes and strips
Over-the-counter products mainly remove surface stains. They can keep a result fresh, but they rarely change the natural shade of the tooth by much.
What whitening cannot change
Whitening works on natural enamel only. Existing crowns, veneers and fillings keep their colour, and some deep stains, for example from certain medicines or trauma, respond poorly. In those cases veneers or crowns are often the better solution.
How long do results last?
With good care, results usually last from several months to a few years. Limiting dark drinks, not smoking and regular cleanings help the shade last longer.
Is whitening safe?
Professional whitening is safe for healthy teeth and gums. Temporary sensitivity is common and settles within a few days. Pregnant women and people with untreated decay or gum disease should wait until those are addressed.
